What are the common misconceptions about microwave technology?
Common myths that microwaves make food radioactive or dangerous, or
cause illness, or destroy the nutritional value of food have circulated for
decades. But It’s simply not the case.
Microwave cooking CAN be healthy.
Here's how.
Since the first release of microwaves in the 1940s,
there have been myths about microwaves destroying nutrients in food. Luckily
that's simply not the case. The microwave is now known to provide a safe and
nutritious method of cooking and can even be an advantageous method over
roasting or frying.
Believe it or not, microwaves are actually one of the
less nutrient-damaging cooking methods. According to WHO
(World Health Organisation), “Food cooked in a microwave oven
is as safe, and has the same nutrient value, as food cooked in a conventional
oven. The main difference between these two methods of cooking is that
microwave energy penetrates deeper into the food and reduces the time for heat
to be conducted throughout the food, thus reducing the overall cooking time." Microwaves are a form of
electromagnetic energy, which vibrates or excites the food inside and warms it
up by a process of friction. Instead of using a saucepan of boiling water to
conduct and transfer heat from one source to the other, microwaves use energy
to heat food, making the process a lot faster.
